WhatsApp does not have one video limit. It has two, and which one applies depends on how fast your connection is, so a clip that sent fine on Wi-Fi can be refused or squeezed on a weak signal. Documents are a different rule again. This page uses the smaller video limit by default, so a file that fits also fits when the signal is poor.
Why WhatsApp has this limit
WhatsApp does not publish its reasoning. What its help page shows is that the video limit follows your connection: 100 MB at 720p on a faster connection and 64 MB at 480p on a slower one. Documents are allowed up to 2 GB, a limit WhatsApp raised from 100 MB in 2022 when it announced end-to-end encrypted file sharing.

What FitSize does with your file
FitSize defaults to the smaller video limit, because you usually cannot know which one WhatsApp will apply when the message goes out. Switch to the faster-connection limit if you are sure, or to the document limit if you are sending a file that should stay untouched. The video is compressed on your device; it is not uploaded anywhere.
Best fit for a 30-second clip at 64 MB: 1080p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 1 min 37 s). Best fit for a 2-minute clip at 64 MB: 720p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 3 min 31 s).
Your file never leaves your device. It is read and compressed by your browser, and nothing is uploaded to a server.
Three things to watch on WhatsApp
- Two video limits, chosen by your connection. The help page gives a default video size limit of 100 MB and 720p for users on a faster connection, and 64 MB and 480p for users on a slower one. The older 16 MB figure that many guides still quote does not appear on the current page. Source: faq.whatsapp.com
- Status videos are capped at 90 seconds. Status videos have a maximum duration of 90 seconds, and HD media is not currently available for status updates or profile pictures, so compression alone will not make a long clip work as a status. Source: faq.whatsapp.com
- Sending as a document uses a different limit. For documents the maximum file size is 2 GB, and you can send up to 100 photos or videos at once with a caption on each. Supported video formats are 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV and MP4. Source: faq.whatsapp.com
