You hit the wall in the middle of sharing a clip: Discord says the file is too large. The limit has moved twice in two years, so advice you find online is often out of date. Below is the current number, what Discord says about how it is checked, and how to get a file under it without guessing.
Why Discord has this limit
Discord treats the limit as a cost and usage decision, and changes it. It lowered the free limit from 25 MB to 10 MB in September 2024, which outlets including Slashdot reported as a response to storage costs, and raised it to 20 MB in August 2026. Its help centre says it regularly revisits its file limits to reflect how people actually use Discord.

What FitSize does with your file
FitSize aims for a file safely under the free limit and lets you switch to a Nitro tier with one click. Because Discord now checks the size of the file you pick, before its own compression, on both desktop and mobile, there is no benefit in hoping Discord's app will shrink it for you: the file you choose is the file that is measured. Your video stays on your device while it is compressed.
Best fit for a 30-second clip at 20 MB: 1080p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 30 s). Best fit for a 2-minute clip at 20 MB: 480p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 2 min 17 s).
Your file never leaves your device. It is read and compressed by your browser, and nothing is uploaded to a server.
Three things to watch on Discord
- Discord checks the size before it compresses. Discord's help centre says the limit is now checked on the file you choose, before any compression, on desktop and mobile alike. On mobile it used to compress first and only tell you afterwards, so a clip that used to squeak through can now be refused. Source: support.discord.com
- Android can hit the limit more often. Discord notes that on Android, where source files tend to be larger, you may hit the size limit more often than before even though the stated number is higher, while desktop and iOS users should generally find uploads easier. Source: support.discord.com
- Some accounts see different limits. Discord says it is currently experimenting with file size limits, so select users may be able to upload larger files. Nitro Basic is 50 MB and Nitro is up to 1 GB; many guides still quote 10 MB for free accounts and 500 MB for Nitro, which the current help page does not support. Source: support.discord.com
