Discord: Free (no Nitro)
Discord's help centre says the free limit is 20 MB as of August 2026, up from 10 MB, and that size is now checked before compression on desktop and mobile alike (mobile used to compress first). Discord says it is experimenting with limits, so some accounts may see more. It also says Android users with large source files may hit the limit more often than before. Many third-party guides still say 10 MB.

| When | Change | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| 5 September 2024 | 25 MB to 10 MB | Free limit lowered from 25 MB to 10 MB, announced 2024-09-05 (reported by Slashdot, GIGAZINE, Dexerto and TechRadar; rollout date may differ). Not confirmed on a Discord page we could read. |
| August 2026 | 10 MB to 20 MB | Free limit raised to 20 MB and mobile switched to measuring size before compression. Discord's File Attachments FAQ says 'as of August 2026'; Discord's own post on X (seen in search results, dated 2026-08-13) says the same. |
Discord: Nitro Basic
Stated on the same File Attachments FAQ as the free limit.

No earlier value is on record for this limit. That does not mean it never changed: we can only list changes we have seen.
Discord: Nitro
The FAQ says Nitro offers up to 1 GB. News coverage of the free-tier change said 500 MB, which the official page does not support. The 'up to' wording and Discord's note about experimenting with limits mean some accounts may differ.
