Compress a video to 100 MB
Drop a video and FitSize shrinks it to fit under 100 MB, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Target size
- 100 MB
- Platforms with this limit
- 7
- Table assumes
- 30 fps, 16:9, stereo audio
You are uploading to a work or school tool, where a round hundred megabytes is a common ceiling for chat attachments, grading sites and code repositories. The numbers here are generous: at this size compression is mostly about making a longer recording fit rather than about making it look worse.
How long a video fits in 100 MB
The longest clip that keeps each resolution at each quality, worked out with the same arithmetic FitSize uses to plan an encode. Times use h, m and s for hours, minutes and seconds, and are rounded down, so a clip at the listed length fits.
| Resolution | High | Balanced | Smallest |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 1m 41s | 2m 31s | 3m 58s |
| 720p | 3m 44s | 5m 30s | 8m 30s |
| 480p | 8m 00s | 11m 31s | 17m 10s |
| 360p | 13m 21s | 18m 42s | 30m 48s |
Assumes 30 fps, a 16:9 picture and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps. A different frame rate, a taller picture or a bigger audio track changes the times.
Worked examples
- A 30-second clip: 1080p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 2 min 31 s).
- A 2-minute clip: 1080p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 2 min 31 s).
- A 10-minute clip: 480p at Balanced quality (that resolution holds up to 11 min 31 s).
What quality to expect
A 2-minute 720p clip at this size gets about 0.229 bits per pixel per frame. That is above our High preset (0.12), so the clip should look close to the original at that resolution. This is an estimate from bitrate arithmetic, not a measurement: real quality depends on the footage, and fast motion or fine detail needs more.
Who needs 100 MB
These verified limits are at or just above 100 MB.
| Platform | Its limit | Aim for |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub: Video, repository on a paid plan | 100 MB | 100 MB |
| Gradescope: Individual PDF submission | 100 MB | 100 MB |
| Gradescope: Programming assignment (all files together) | 100 MB | 100 MB |
| Microsoft Teams: Chat attachments | 100 MB | 100 MB |
| Schoology: File upload (enhanced) question type | 100 MB | 100 MB |
| Turnitin: Paper submission (single file) | under 100 MB | 99.9 MB |
| WhatsApp: Video, faster connection | 100 MB | 100 MB |
What each of these limits covers
- GitHub: Video, repository on a paid plan. Videos over 10 MB also require you to be an organization member, an outside collaborator, or on a paid plan yourself. Source: docs.github.com
- Gradescope: Individual PDF submission. Individual PDFs up to 100 MB. Instructor uploads have a higher limit of 256 MB. Source: guides.gradescope.com
- Gradescope: Programming assignment (all files together). Up to 256 individual files (or a zip) and 100 MB in total uploaded directly; larger submissions can use the GitHub or Bitbucket integration. Source: guides.gradescope.com
- Microsoft Teams: Chat attachments. The chat limits table lists a 100 MB file size limitation and at most 10 attachments per message. Files shared in chat are stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, which have their own, larger limit (see teams-channel-files). Source: learn.microsoft.com
- Schoology: File upload (enhanced) question type. PowerSchool's documentation for the enhanced file upload question says there is a file size limit of 100 MB for uploaded files. Source: uc.powerschool-docs.com
- Turnitin: Paper submission (single file). A submitted file must be under 100 MB and under 800 pages. The page is Turnitin's general submission requirements; an institution's integration (LMS plugin) may add its own limit. Source: guides.turnitin.com
- WhatsApp: Video, faster connection. Default video size limit for users on a faster connection, with 720p resolution. This is the Web help page; other platforms' pages may differ. The older 16 MB figure many guides quote does not appear on this page. Supported video formats listed: 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4. Source: faq.whatsapp.com
Tips at 100 MB
- The table is built for ordinary phone-style footage. A mostly still screen recording usually needs less, so read the table as the cautious case.
- Check whether the site limits the file or the length as well. Several of the services on this page also cap duration or the number of files.
- For a submission that will be graded or reviewed, legibility matters more than smoothness: a lower frame rate at a sharp resolution is often the better trade.
